apple annnounced their itunes music store today (rumours have been circulating for weeks). it's better than the music industry's own efforts like pressplay. you can preview tracks, buy them for a dollar, put them in your ipod, or burn them (as many times as you want). it doesn't offer file sharing though; it's a centralized mechanism. will people buy into it? probably enough to keep it going for a while. will it really take off? not until it offers real file sharing - user collaboration is where half the power is in the digital music game.
