Interesting article about PlanetLab, a research consortium, who are using PC's as smart routers - which actually process information rather than simply redirect it, so they can check for viruses and other malware, and probably do tons of other cool things in the future. They've already set up about 250 of them.
Is it a good idea to decentralize intelligence? I think it will enable all sorts of cool applications - of course, it also enables all the things we
don't want, like segregation of different net islands, massive monitoring by corporates, and, most importantly, more vulnerability at a lower level.
