AT&T Labs last week patented a method for spam to circumvent filters. It's actually a pretty cool method.

Geekiness aside, is there any strategic significance to this? Probably not - the IP strategy most corporate labs employ is sometimes called the patent thicket (PDF): they register as many patents as they can get away with. This is just one that pushed people's buttons.
