Salt Lake City's massive gamble on a publicly funded high-speed fiber network. Good news? For consumers - yes. Broadband penetration is highest in countries where it was subsidized by the government.

Besides, the telcos and cable companies will always and everywhere play games with consumers for high-speed access - because their natural monopoly gives them the market power to do so. At least until 802.x lets cheap, ubiquitous, metro wireless networks become a reality.

Then, the incumbent telcos will cry foul and mount a massive appeal to authority - in this case, to everyone's favorite regulator, the FCC.
