Link. Innovation without a purpose - and I don't use that word casually, I mean specifically that firms must have a purpose - is pointless. Here's a nice example why: purpose is what links value creation (resources, competences, etc) to value delivery (business model). Without purpose to guide strategy, there's no link - and you end up with either herding behaviour, which leads to Red Queen races, or strategic incoherence (like this).
