Industry Note: When Market Leaders Are Still Behind the Curve
Les Moonves is getting it half-right; but his inability to make the distinction between markets, networks, and communities is going to cause future problems.
Last.fm isn't really a social net - and misunderstanding what it is is going to cause confusion about why and where CBS should leverage it.
In this case, video might be a bridge too far - and where's the need for it? The music market is rich enough to let the Last.fm acq pay itself back numerous times over.
I think Les should focus on what the next value chain looks like - he's doing better than most media CEOs, but that's not saying much :)
